Structure: Steel highway guardrail is composed of steel beams and posts fixed and clamped between them. Galvanized steel posts are fixed between beam steel guardrail. In the normal operation of motorway, steel highway guardrails can be easily inserted into the pre-set plug-in hole by post, which plays the role of isolation and protection while it corresponds to the rail belt at outside of the road bed, which is neat, uniform and beautiful.
 

Working Principle: Steel highway guardrail is the main appearance of semi-rigid barrier, which is a continuous structure with thrie or w beam steel guardrail spliced with each other and supported by steel post. It uses the deformation of road base, steel post and thrie or w beam steel guardrail to absorb impact energy, and forces uncontrollable vehicles to change direction and return to the right way and prevent vehicles from smashing out of the road, so as to safeguard vehicles and passengers and minimize the losses caused by accidents.


Standards

Hot dip galvanized steel highway guardrail and post according to industry standard JT/T281-2007 and AASHTO M180. Its metal material adopts carbon structural steel or low alloy steel and cold bended or cold formed, and mechanical properties are not less than the requirement of S235JR or S355JR steel EN10025. The surface of highway steel guardrail is usually hot dip galvanized or plastic coated to prevent rust, people call it hot dip galvanized steel highway guardrail, or zinc steel guardrail, or zinc coated steel guardrail.

 

Materials

 

Steel plate for galvanized steel highway guardrail Q235 carbon structural steel is also called A3 plate, which is equal to S235JR of EN10025 while Q345 is also typical material for thrie and w beam steel guardrail which equals to S355JR according to EN10025. Is a common carbon structural steel. It is composed of Q + number + quality level symbol + deoxidation method symbol. Its steel grade is initialed with "Q", which represents the yield point of the steel. The following numbers represent the yield point value, and the unit is MPa. For example, Q235 represents the carbon structural steel with a yield stress of 235 MPa.

GENERAL INFORMATION


1. DESCRIPTION

Our Highway Guardrail Beam meet AASHTO M180 Class A, Class B, Type I and Type II, and SGS Test Report showing the goods meeting AASHTO M180 (Standard Specification for Corrugated Sheet Steel Beams for Highway Guardrail) for each order is available upon request.

Classification, materials, mechanical properties, coating requirements and ordering information of highway guardrail are accurately described and designated according to AASHTO M180.


2. SPECIFICATIONS

Classification, materials, mechanical properties, coating requirements and ordering information of highway guardrail are accurately described and designated according to AASHTO M180.

2.1 Classification:
Types: Surface treatment are divided into four types, and type I and type II are hot dip galvanized surface treatment.
Type I-Zinc coated, 550 g/m2 (1.80 oz/ft2) minimum single-spot.
Type II-Zinc coated, 1100 g/m2 (3.60 oz/ft2) minimum single-spot.
Type III-Beams to be painted.
Type IV-Beams of corrosion resistant steel.
Classes: steel thickness is categorized into two class
Class A-Base metal nominal thickness-2.67 mm (0.105 in.)
Class B-Base metal nominal thickness-3.43 mm (0.135 in.)

2.2 Base Metal:

The beam, transition, end, and buffer sections shall consist of sheet made of open hearth, electric furnace or basic oxygen steel and shall meet the mechanical properties specified in Section 8 as below.
Mechanical properties: The mechanical properties of the base metal shall conform to the following requirements:
Beams and transition sections:
Yield Point, minimum, 345 MPa (50000 psi);

Tensile Strength, minimum 483 MPa (70000 psi); and
Elongation, in 50 mm (2 in.), minimum, 12 percent.
End and buffer sections:
Yield Point, minimum, 227 MPa (33000 psi); and
Tensile Strength, minimum 310 MPa (45000 psi).


2.3 Coating requirements:
Type I and Type II beams:
The beams may be galvanized before or after fabrication.

The mass of coating shall conform to the requirements prescribed in Table 1 for the types

specified. The mass of coating is the total amount of galvanizing on both sides of a sheet or beam,
expressed as grams per square meter (oz/ft2) of sheet.

2.4 Ordering information:
Orders for guardrail under this specification shall include the following information, as required, to adequately described material:
  • Quantity (linear meter or number of pieces).
  • Class of guardrail.

  • Effective length of beam section 3.8 mm or 7.6 mm.
  • Shape (W-beam or Thrie-beam).
