Officers at 12:45 p.m. on May 9 responded to Regency Place near the intersection of Regency Circle for a one-vehicle crash.

A Buick SUV struck two mailboxes and a light pole on the street. One mailbox was a brick structure that was destroyed.

The driver, a 67-year-old Westlake resident, appeared to be impaired, according to a police department press release. He said he was not injured.

Officers field-tested the man and then arrested him for operating a vehicle while intoxicated. At the Westlake jail, the driver refused a breath test. His license was immediately suspended and he was charged with OVI and failure to control. Later he was released to a sober relative.

Officers at 8:30 p.m. on May 15 responded to Holiday Inn Express after a hotel clerk called the department and reported a man refused to leave the hotel after the staff refused to accept a credit card reported as stolen.

The 38-year-old man was in the hotel lobby and told officers that he had a weapon, according to a Westlake Police Department press release. One of the man’s hands was enclosed and completely concealed in a drawstring bag, according to the police department. Following a lengthy discussion, officers took the man into custody after he eventually removed his hand from the bag. It turned out there was no gun.

The suspect was charged with felony receiving stolen property, aggravated menacing, and inducing panic. He had an entered felony warrant from Portage County for a weapons offense and a misdemeanor warrant from Richmond Heights for trespass. He was taken to the Cuyahoga County Jail.

Police officers at 12:45 p.m. on May 10 responded to a report of a shoplifting at Fresh Thyme Market.

About 40 minutes earlier, a customer had walked out of the store with about $400 worth of expensive meat products, according to a police department press release. He did not pay for the food before fleeing in a dark-colored two-door vehicle with a dark soft-top roof.

Surveillance photos and information from the investigation led police officers to a 51-year-old North Olmsted man who was arrested on May 12 with the help of the North Olmsted Police Department.

Officers took the man to the Cuyahoga County Justice Center because he also was wanted on a felony drug warrant through the Sheriff’s Office. He will be charged with misdemeanor theft for the shoplifting case, according to the Westlake Police Department.
