An electrical incident in Newton, Massachusetts, Monday injured a worker and left traffic lights and homes in the dark.

The incident happened at approximately 10:30 a.m. at a substation on Homer Street, right across from Newton City Hall.

The fire department said a man suffered burns to his arms, neck and head. He was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston for treatment.

"An Eversource employee is being treated at a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries," Eversource said in a statement.

A second person who was inside the building did not require hospitalization, the fire department said.

Witnesses in the neighborhood said there was an electrical incident inside a building, and several people who live in the area said their power went out.

The fire department said high levels of carbon monoxide had to be vented from the building.

The power outage map for Eversource showed there were outages in the area of Newton City Hall.

“Just before 11 a.m., an equipment issue at one of our substations in Newton caused a small fire on our property and a power outage affecting approximately 2,500 customers in the area,” Eversource said in a statement.

Eversource crews had restored electricity to all customers by midafternoon and the substation was back up and running.

The injured Eversource employee suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to the company.
