Power has been restored to Renown Regional Medical Center as of 5:35 p.m., according to a hospital spokeswoman. The emergency room is off divert status.

The Sierra Tower at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno is dealing with an extended loss of electricity after complications involving a planned power outage.

The tower as well as part of the hospital’s Sierra complex has been without power since 11 a.m., Renown confirmed on Thursday afternoon. The power loss was part of a planned outage today due to ongoing construction, said spokesperson Caroline Ackerman. The medical center had a planned outage yesterday as well, she said.

Today’s outage was supposed to end at 3 p.m. but Renown has run into issues restoring the power, according to Ackerman.

“(The Sierra Tower) is on backup power,” Ackerman said. “This is not affecting patient care.”

Ackerman also confirmed that Renown Regional Medical Center’s emergency room is on divert status but added that it is not due to the power outage. Renown expects the ER to be off divert status by 5 p.m.

"When any ER in our region is on divert, ambulances are sent to locations that aren't on divert. Today that could have been Renown South Meadows, Northern Nevada's ERs or Saint Mary's, depending on their status," Ackerman told the RGJ.

Renown is now working to get power back to the affected facilities. The medical center was not able to provide an estimate on when it expects power to be restored.

“We’re really excited that we’re able to expand care and improve what we offer our community, which means construction," Ackerman said. "We're glad to share that patients haven't been impacted and we're very grateful for our employee's patience."
