Townsville City Council is improving road safety along Horseshoe Bay Road on Magnetic Island.
4km of road from Olympus Crescent in Arcadia to Pacific Drive in Horseshoe Bay will be upgraded. Improvements include approximately 4km of pavement repairs and asphalt resurfacing, installation of approximately 1.6km of new guardrail, new safety signage including vehicle-activated warning signs, pavement marking, some kerb and channel installation, footpath upgrades and minor drainage works.
Construction commenced Monday 30 May 2022 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2022, weather and conditions permitting.
During construction, traffic management and lane closures will be in place. Traffic delays are expected - residents and visitors are encouraged to allow for extra travel time.
This is just one of several projects Council is completing on Magnetic Island this financial year, with millions being invested in community infrastructure, renewal of water and wastewater assets and road projects.
This $9 million project is funded by the Queensland and Australian Governments, with the Queensland Government contributing $7 million under the Local Road Network Capital Grants Program and the Australian Government contributing $2 million under the Black Spot Program.
Townsville City Council is preparing to install new guardrails along an identified section of Horseshoe Bay Road, near The Forts bus stop.
As part of these works, Council will:
Council has scheduled these works to commence on Monday 30 May 2022 and expects the works to take 10 weeks to complete, weather and conditions permitting.
During these works, traffic along this section of Horseshoe Bay Road will temporarily become one-way and guided by portable traffic lights.
The Horseshoe Bay Road Rehabilitation and Guardrail Project includes 4km of road improvement works including new guardrail and safety signage, resurfacing, kerb and channel, footpath and minor drainage works.
Improvements will be made along Horseshoe Bay Road, from Olympus Crescent in Arcadia to Pacific Drive in Horseshoe Bay. Works will be conducted in stages along the road.
Horseshoe Bay Road connects residents and visitors to Horseshoe Bay, a key piece in Magnetic Island’s tourism offering. As the only road connecting Horseshoe Bay to the rest of Magnetic Island, it is important that this popular road is well maintained and safe to use.

Council is investing $9 million to rehabilitate Horseshoe Bay Road, with $7 million funded by the Queensland Government and $2 million funded by the Australian Government.
