IRON COUNTY — A motorcyclist was pronounced dead after colliding with a guardrail on state Route 20 Friday afternoon.

Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Eddie Wright said the incident involved a female motorcyclist who was operating a Harley-Davidson and traveling eastbound on SR-20 near milepost 11.5 at about 12:50 p.m.

The roadway crash location, about halfway between Interstate 15 and U.S. Route 89, consists of a downhill grade with a left-hand corner turn.

According to a news release from the Utah Department of Public Safety, the initial investigation suggested that the motorcycle was traveling too fast around the turn and the driver and motorcycle slid off the right side of the road.

The female motorcyclist was separated from the motorcycle and hit the guardrail, sustaining life-threatening injuries, the news release said.

The motorcyclist succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The deceased’s husband was traveling behind the female on a separate motorcycle at the time of the crash, according to the news release.

The motorcycle crash is under investigation by both the Major Crash Investigation Team and area troopers. The far-right lane was closed but was to have re-opened around 4 p.m.

This report is based on statements from law enforcement and may not contain the full scope of findings.
