Entergy New Orleans announced upgrades to its Derbigny substation that will help deter animal-related outages.

The substation provides energy to more than 9,000 customers in the Central Business District.

Last year, there were several animal-related incidents that resulted in widespread power outages.

Entergy said new laser installations have been placed at the substation to deter birds, and crews also upgraded fencing to prevent animals from getting inside.

According to a news release issued by Entergy, the utility has also implemented a new system that will identify and react to any failures at the substation more quickly. Those upgrades should be completed by the end of the year.

The new upgrades will help minimize the risk of outages and shorten power restoration times, according to Entergy.
