A dump truck smashed through a guard rail and flew off a west Interstate 8 off-ramp onto Morena Boulevardin Mission Valley Wednesday morning, ending up overturned in a riverbed.
San Diego firefighters and California Highway Patrol officers responded to the crash, which was reported around 10:20 a.m.
The truck, which was loaded with dirt, toppled about 40 to 50 feet into the riverbed below the ramp. The driver was trapped in the wrecked truck and had to be extricated, a rescue that took about 20 minutes to complete, Battalion Chief Jared Deneen told OnScene TV.
It took another 20 minutes to vertically haul the patient up to the ambulance, so he could be transported to a hospital to be treated for serious injures, he said.
The CHP closed northbound Morena from Taylor Street to deal with a diesel fuel spill.
The eastbound I-8 ramp to Morena also was closed.
