Connecticut State Police say they’re investigating a crash early Saturday on Route 72 in New Britain that seriously injured a teenager.

NEW BRITAIN — A Toyota Camry carrying a 19-year-old man and four teenagers went out of control, crossed the highway and caromed off roadway structures on both sides of Route 72 early Saturday, seriously injuring one of the passengers, state police say.

According to police, the accident occurred on Route 72 east near Route 9 south at around 3:36 a.m. Police identified the driver of the vehicle as Vicente Pablo Estrada, 19, of New Britain.

Police said Estrada was driving in the freeway’s left lane when he lost control of the car for an unknown reason. The vehicle collided with the metal beam guardrail in the left shoulder, ran across both travel lanes and collided with a concrete bridge support in the right shoulder, according to police. The car veered back across the highway and collided again with the guardrail before finally stopping, police said.

The crash caused serious injuries for a teenage girl in the car, who was transported to Hartford Hospital, police said. Estrada suffered minor injuries and was taken to an area hospital, according to police.

The other three teenagers were not injured and declined medical attention, police said.

Parents and guardians of the individuals were notified of the incident, police said. The crash is under investigation.
