CHEBOYGAN — Crews with the City of Cheboygan will be making repairs around Pine Hill Cemetery, which will include fixing erosion issues on the creek bank and a guard rail damaged by a car accident.

Cheboygan City Manager Dan Sabolsky had previously brought these issues before the city council to make the members aware of the upcoming work.

"I've been able to talk to a couple people about coming in and fixing that," said Sabolsky. "I'm asking up to $15,000 to repair the creek bank in Pine Hill Cemetery."

Sabolsky said there are a couple of trees that may come down in the near future that should be removed before they fall on their own. There is also a part of the creek bank that runs through the cemetery that is being washed away and needs to be reinforced.

Sabolsky said the goal is to get workers from Northern Excavation to the cemetery as soon as possible, so the issues don't turn into larger problems for the city.

The bridge on Pine Hill Avenue will also be repaired, with new posts and guard rails on the structure going over the creek.

The guard rail and posts had been damaged in the past when a vehicle hit them during an accident.

"We're going to fix that temporarily on both sides," said Sabolsky.

Cheboygan Department of Public Works Director Jason Karmol and Sabolsky are currently working to get some cost estimates to bring before council. These estimates are for the complete replacement of the bridge over the creek.

Council voted to allow Sabolsky to spend the money needed to address the issues at the cemetery, up to $15,000.

City officials also entered into an agreement with Gracie Larson, the sexton at Pine Hill Cemetery, to do some maintenance on the pedestrian bridge in the older section of the cemetery. Concerns have been voiced at several council meetings in the last few months regarding the state of the bridge.

Larson will be power washing the bridge and then putting some stain on the structure to help preserve it.

"We're going to use a product that will seal it up and also add some texture to that bridge," said Sabolsky. "Then our crews will come in and reinforce the railings on that particular pedestrian bridge."

City crews have also been working on filling some of the pot holes and repairing issues with the paved roads through the older section of the cemetery, to make those roads easier to travel. In the newer section, on the south end of Pine Hill Avenue, a sink hole in that section will also be repaired.

Sabolsky said there is some money in the city's cemetery account that will be used to complete this work.
