Aug. 11—One person is dead following a fiery crash Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 70 at the 22 mile marker, east of the Arlington Road exit in Clay Township near Brookville.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol's Dayton Post said that based on initial investigation, the crash occurred at 4:36 p.m. when a Nissan NV Cargo van traveling east on I-70 went off the left side of the road and hit the end of a guardrail.

The van continued in the grass median, crashed into an overhead traffic sign post and caught fire.

An ODOT traffic camera image shows that the vehicle struck the north support pole to an overhead highway sign.

The driver was thrown from the van and died at the scene, the OSHP said. Their identity is being withheld while law enforcement contacts their next of kin.

Following the crash, both lanes of I-70 East were closed, and I-70 West temporarily was down to one lane. The highway was closed for about five hours and has since reopened, OSHP said.

This crash remains under investigation.

Highway troopers were joined at the crash scene by the Clay Township Police Department, Brookville Police Department, Brookville Fire Department, Phillipsburg Fire Department, Englewood Truck Towing & Recovery, the Montgomery County Coroner's Office and the Ohio Department of Transportation.
